Created to prevent a national chain restaurant from occupying this same space, Top of the Hill was conceived to be the social crossroads of Chapel Hill – a mingling place for graduate students, faculty, town residents, tourists, undergraduates or anyone lucky enough to find themselves in the southern part of heaven.
We strive to provide not only a great dining and social experience, but one that is intrinsically linked to Chapel Hill and Franklin Street. Please enjoy the view over historic downtown and make sure to take time to look at our collection of historic Chapel Hill photographs.
We have been awarded over 25 “Best in the Triangle” and “Best of” Awards including Best Restaurant in Chapel Hill, Best Micro Brew, Best Outdoor Deck, Coolest Place on Franklin Street, Best Place to See and Be Seen, Best Place to Impress a First Date and Best Bartender.
Our beers have won 18 medals in the World Beer Championships. Our Kenan Summer Lager was rated higher than Miller, Budweiser, Foster’s, Kirin, Amstel, Michelob, Dos Equis, Pacifico, Pete’s Summer Ale and Moosehead to name a few.
According to beer critic Roger Protz, in his 1999 book, The World of Beer, Top of the Hill is one of 12 Breweries in North America that you must visit to understand the North American brewing experience.
The awards are nice, but what really matters is customers having a great time. We hope you will come and join us soon.

CASK BEER
Available exclusively at The Back Bar, Cask Beer is a throwback to how beer was made in the 1800's. Beer is dry-hopped in a firkin, served through a manual beer engine and served between 50 & 55 degrees Fahrenheit, which allows natural subtle nuances of flavor to emerge. Top of the Hill is the first establishment south of the Mason-Dixon line to have its own cask beer program.
